Leather is used for a wide range of products. The variety of skins and the way they are processed can produce leather as soft as a cloth and as hard as a shoe sole. The process of using chemicals to turn skins into leather is called tanning.
  How to Clean Leather Correctly…

Leather is an expensive product. In order to remove stains and keep it in a proper condition, one obviously needs to know how to clean leather. Cleaning leather is not as easy as it may sound. Cleaning can change the color or appearance of the leather. The best method for cleaning leather is determined by the type of stain and the type of the leather. Before cleaning the leather we have to determine whether the leather is finished like furniture, luggage and garments or unfinished like baseball gloves, work boots and saddles. The following are the general instructions on how to clean leather.

  1. You should always test the cleaning on a small invisible patch of leather before proceeding to the entire item.
  2. You should avoid products like mink oil, shoe polishes, and waxes when cleaning leather furniture or garments.
  3. Leather must be cleaned with a mild detergent or soap put on a damp cloth without using much water. Then the detergent or soap must be wiped off with a clean damp cloth. Leather must be polished with a dry towel and must be treated with a leather conditioner after it has dried completely.
  4. Unfinished leather must be oiled with a leather preservative such as mink oil.
The following are some of the ways on how to correctly clean leather.

  1. Using clean water, you should first dampen the surface area you wish to clean. By doing so you will be able to remove all the dust particles and this will enable you to clean the leather correctly.
  2. Before the surface dries, you must clean the surface with any good brand leather cleaner available in the market by using a sponge. You should rub the area well so as to correctly clean it.
  3. You should rinse the area with clear water and allow it to dry.

For ultimate protection after correctly cleaning the leather, it must be treated with a leather preservative and a leather conditioner that nourishes, restores and waterproofs leather. Hence cleaning of the leather should be such that it repairs the leather and restores its finish.
