that this proverb has been wrongly written, you can think twice. This phrase is most certainly applicable in the glitterati world of gems and jewelry where all that glitters is not just gold, but silver, diamond and pearls as well.

A piece of jewelry minus its glaze and luster looks more like a piece of junk. So in order to assure that our jewelry always looks what it is worth of we should know how to clean jewelry. Since there are different ways to clean jewelry made of different metals therefore we must also learn how to clean jewelry in a way so that the individual metals can retain their original look and shine.

  So lets go through a few important tips on how to clean jewelry:
 

Gold Jewelry-
It’s not too difficult to learn how to clean jewelry made of gold. Regular use of gold jewelry can leave behind residue on them. This residue is comprised of the powders and lotions that we use in our daily life. Besides accumulation of dust particles is also not uncommon in the intricate carvings of gold jewelry. Using a mild detergent diluted in water can easily clean all this dirt. The jewelry can be scrubbed clean with a help of a discarded soft bristle toothbrush. Jewelry polishing cloths, for example chamois, also make it easier and quicker for us to clean gold jewelry.

Silver Jewelry -
Learning how to clean jewelry made of sterling silver is not a mammoth task either. Silver jewelry can also be cleaned easily with the help of water and ammonia solution. However we must be careful to avoid letting our silver jewelry to come in contact with swimming pools and hot tubs. This is because the chlorine content present in the swimming pool water can easily react with silver and tarnish its polish.

Here’s how to clean jewelry which have pearls or gems set in them- Though its safe enough to dip most gems in alcohol, its always suggested that we use mild soapy water for cleaning pearls because they are very delicate and highly susceptible to scratches.

Diamond Jewelry-
Diamond jewelry can be cleaned either with the help of mild detergent or mild dishwashing detergent. This helps in restoring back the diamond’s brilliance.

Besides learning how to clean jewelry it is also important to know how to store them and take their proper care. Jewelry should always be kept in a fabric lined jewel case with separate compartments that will prevent abrasion. Even while cleaning jewelry we must remember not to let them stay immersed in the water for too long. Excess moisture also diminishes the sparkle of the jewelry. We should use hair sprays and perfumes only after we have removed the jewelry that we are wearing. Avoid wearing jewelry while cooking, gardening etc.
